Willamette Valley
If you trust me, and I mean really trust me, then press buy 12 times. This is going to be one of the best warm-weather white wines that you taste this summer.
It’s true that I’m biased when it comes to Goodfellow Family Cellars. Owner/winemaker Marcus Goodfellow is a longtime friend, and I’ve supported these wines for years at my store.
If you haven’t heard me talk about the wines, here is a cheat sheet. Goodfellow was founded in 2002 and remains a small producer, focusing on old-vine plantings in unique and beautiful sites throughout the Willamette Valley. Goodfellow makes only 4,000 cases of wine a year. The wines are all sourced from non-irrigated, sustainably farmed grapes in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. There is great pride in the longstanding relationships Marcus has developed with various grower-farmers, and their accumulated knowledge, experience, commitment, and sacrifice are the foundation of the winery. In the cellar, Marcus keeps things simple and traditional, which is the best way to capture the expression of each vineyard.
Now, as for this wine, it comes from the incredible Whistling Ridge Vineyard, located in the Ribbon Ridge AVA of the Willamette Valley. The 2024 Field Blend is made from 64% Riesling, 20% Pinot Noir, 12% Pinot Blanc, and 4% Gewürztraminer. The grapes are co-planted in the vineyard, then harvested and fermented together.
The 2024 vintage of Whistling Ridge Blanc is incredibly fresh and vibrant at only 10.2% alcohol. Beautiful aromatics pick up some of the floral notes from the Gewürztraminer, with plenty of bright citrus, flinty minerality, ripping acidity, and a texture that just glides across the palate. Marcus produced just 100 cases of this wine, so we won’t have it for very long. Buy a case. You won’t regret it.
